VISIE™ Inc. Unveils Continuous Anatomic Auto Tracking for Robotic Knee Surgery

VISIE Inc., formerly Advanced Scanners, has successfully showcased Continuous Anatomic Auto Tracking (CAAT) for robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (RA-TKA) at its headquarters in Austin, TX.

CAAT is a groundbreaking technology that enhances surgical robotic and navigation systems for orthopedic, neuro, cranial, and spine surgeries, including robotic-assisted total knee arthroplasty (RA-TKA). This innovative feature enables VISIE’s 3D scanners to swiftly register the distal femur and proximal tibia to pre-operative CT scans, allowing for real-time tracking of the knee joint’s movement during surgery.

The goal of CAAT is to synchronize an integrated surgical robotic arm with the knee’s motion, providing continuous visibility of the anatomy throughout the procedure.

Dr. J. Craig Morrison, an orthopedic joint replacement surgeon, emphasizes its potential impact: “If robotic systems could see the patient like we do, it would transform orthopedic surgery, reducing the need for pins and arrays and saving time and tissue.”

CAAT aims to eliminate the need for tracking arrays currently used in robotic procedures, which require pins to be inserted into the femur and tibia. Dr. Shiraz K. Patel highlights the drawbacks of these systems, making the case for a pinless solution.

VISIE has successfully demonstrated CAAT through bench testing and plans to showcase it live at the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) Annual Meeting in Grapevine, TX, on November 7-8, 2024.

VISIE CEO Douglas Fairbanks expresses excitement about these advancements: “We’ve faced skepticism, but pinless RA-TKA could be revolutionary. I was amazed to see our scanner tracking the knee so effectively.”

The team, led by head of engineering Michael Landry, is focused on moving from technological feasibility to medical device development. While CAAT has not yet been submitted to the FDA, efforts are underway to validate its performance for future submission.
