The survey, which included 1,003 primary care and specialist physicians across the nation, revealed that only five percent of respondents were athenahealth customers.
The third Physician Sentiment Survey (PSS) conducted by athenahealth, in collaboration with The Harris Poll, unveils significant challenges faced by U.S. physicians. Over 93% of surveyed physicians report feeling burned out regularly, often working an average of 15 extra hours per week outside their normal schedules. A majority (56%) have contemplated leaving the field or reducing patient interactions due to these pressures.
These negative sentiments among physicians pose considerable hurdles to the success of American healthcare, impacting both providers and patients alike. The survey, which included 1,003 primary care and specialist physicians nationwide, sheds light on key issues, including the integration of AI into healthcare. Interestingly, 83% of respondents believe AI could potentially alleviate many healthcare challenges, highlighting a shift in attitudes toward technology.
Moreover, the survey delves into physicians’ concerns about data overload and financial sustainability within healthcare organizations. While nearly all physicians (94%) emphasize the importance of accessing the right clinical data at the right time, many (80%) do not believe that increasing data volume always translates to higher-quality care. Financial concerns also weigh heavily, with only 38% of physicians feeling their organizations are financially stable.
Regarding AI, there is a divide in perspectives, with some seeing it as a solution while others perceive it as a potential complication. While 60% express concern about the loss of the human touch in healthcare, many acknowledge AI’s potential in streamlining administrative tasks and enhancing diagnostic accuracy.
In addition to the Physician Sentiment Survey, athenahealth conducted a separate survey on consumers’ perceptions of AI, revealing similar apprehensions about the impact of technology on the human aspect of healthcare. These findings underscore the need for a balanced approach to integrating technology into healthcare, ensuring that it complements rather than detracts from the patient-provider relationship.
