Cigna Group Foundation Announces First Health Equity Impact Fund Grantees

The Cigna Group Foundation, the philanthropic arm of The Cigna Group (NYSE: CI), has announced its first round of grant recipients for The Cigna Group Health Equity Impact Fund. This initiative will distribute $9 million over the next three years to nonprofit organizations aimed at reducing health disparities. The first cohort includes 15 nonprofits based in Hartford, CT, and Houston, TX.

“The Cigna Group Foundation is committed to improving health equity in underserved communities, starting in Hartford and Houston, where care gaps are most significant,” said Melissa Skottegaard, board chair of The Cigna Group Foundation. “By partnering with these organizations, we can better address the root causes of disparities and expand access to essential resources like healthy food, reliable transportation, and culturally sensitive care.”

The fund will focus on high-need areas in the U.S., beginning with Hartford and Houston. The first cohort of grantees will receive a total of $3 million across both cities.

In Hartford, seven organizations received funding, including Charter Oak Health Center, Hartford Public Library, Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford, Malta House of Care, The Health Collective, the University of Connecticut Foundation, and Wheeler Clinic. These programs will help Black and Hispanic adults access culturally relevant care, health screenings, and mobile health services.

In Houston, eight organizations were awarded grants, such as the American Heart Association, Bread of Life, Hispanic Health Coalition, and Memorial Assistance Ministries. The funded programs will focus on reducing obesity and diabetes in Hispanic adults, providing services like diabetes reversal programs, nutrition education, and community health worker engagement.

The Cigna Group Foundation recently committed over $27 million in grants over the next three years to support mental health initiatives for youth and veterans, as well as addressing health equity barriers. The Health Equity Impact Fund is part of this broader commitment.
