ZAP Surgical Raises $78M in Series E Funding Led by Baheal Medical

ZAP Surgical Systems, Inc., a global leader in non-invasive robotic brain surgery, announced today the successful closing of a $78 million Series E funding round, led by Qingdao Baheal Medical Inc., with participation from other strategic investors. The new funding will support the continued commercialization of the company’s innovative ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® platform.

ZAP Surgical Systems, Inc., a leader in non-invasive robotic brain surgery, has successfully closed a $78 million Series E funding round, led by Qingdao Baheal Medical Inc. and supported by additional strategic investors. The funding will support the commercialization of ZAP Surgical’s groundbreaking ZAP-X® Gyroscopic Radiosurgery® platform, which aims to make state-of-the-art radiosurgery more accessible and affordable for patients worldwide.

Expanding Access to Stereotactic Radiosurgery (SRS)

Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is a well-established, non-invasive treatment for various brain tumors, including brain metastases, meningiomas, and conditions like trigeminal neuralgia. As an alternative to open surgery, SRS is delivered in 1 to 5 outpatient treatments, with outcomes that are equal to or superior to traditional surgery—yet without the need for incisions, pain, or extended recovery times.

While over five million patients globally could benefit from SRS each year, only about 200,000 receive optimal care due to the high costs and complexity of traditional SRS technology. The availability of SRS is largely confined to large, urban academic hospitals, leaving an estimated 96% of patients without access to this life-saving treatment.

ZAP Surgical’s Mission to Improve Access

“We founded ZAP Surgical to address a clear need: to make advanced radiosurgery accessible to more patients, without the prohibitive costs and infrastructure challenges of traditional systems,” said John R. Adler, MD, Professor Emeritus of Neurosurgery at Stanford University and Founder and CEO of ZAP Surgical Systems. “This partnership with Baheal Medical aligns perfectly with our mission, providing the ZAP-X platform the reach and support needed to serve millions of underserved patients worldwide.”

A New Era of Radiosurgery

The ZAP-X system offers a revolutionary approach to radiosurgery, using advanced gyroscopic technology to direct precise beams of radiation from thousands of angles. This unique design enhances tumor targeting accuracy while protecting healthy brain tissue and preserving cognitive function. ZAP-X also features a vault-free and cobalt-free design, eliminating the need for costly shielded treatment rooms and removing the reliance on radioactive isotopes for radiation beam production.

“We are excited to partner with ZAP Surgical to expand access to innovative radiosurgery solutions,” said Mr. Fu Gang, Chairman and President of Baheal Medical. “ZAP-X’s approach aligns with our commitment to advancing healthcare by offering more precise and effective treatments for brain tumors and other intracranial diseases, improving the quality of life for patients globally.”
