StemCardia Inc. has secured a license for a range of intellectual property from CoMotion at the University of Washington (UW) and the UW School of Medicine, focusing on next-generation treatments for heart failure, the leading cause of death globally. The company is advancing a pipeline of cellular and genetic therapies aimed at restoring and strengthening heart muscle tissue. This exclusive worldwide license encompasses over 60 patents, including 15 that have been issued or allowed, developed by StemCardia’s scientific founders, including the esteemed clinician-scientist Charles (“Chuck”) Murry, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Charles Murry stated, “The heart is the least regenerative organ in the body, which drives our efforts to address the significant unmet need for heart failure through cellular replacement and genetic enhancement of cardiac muscle.” Murry previously directed the UW Institute for Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine and has recently transitioned to the University of Southern California as chair of the Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine and director of the Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC Keck School of Medicine. His team was the first to successfully demonstrate heart regeneration and restore contractile function in non-human primates.
