StatLab Medical Products, a prominent developer and producer of medical diagnostic supplies and equipment, has revealed its acquisition of Scientific Device Laboratory (SDL). Based in Chicago, SDL specializes in printed diagnostic slides, along with various consumables and kits for anatomic pathology and microbiology markets. This integration extends customer outreach for both companies and establishes a new U.S. research and development center for StatLab.

Founded over four decades ago by Dr. Stewart Lipton, SDL emerged from his recognition of the need for tailored clinical diagnostic products during his tenure as a lab director at a major Chicago hospital. SDL specializes in manufacturing customized products for OEMs, hospitals, and university laboratories, focusing on printed diagnostic slides, control slides, and sample preparation products such as mycobacterial test kits.
Joe Bernardo, StatLab’s Executive Chairman, emphasized the significance of SDL’s acquisition, noting that it complements StatLab’s recent addition of a glass-slide manufacturing site in Germany. This expansion enables enhanced service for customers of both StatLab and SDL with a dual-continent footprint for glass manufacturing and research and development, showcasing StatLab’s strategic differentiation through diverse manufacturing capabilities.
Dr. Stewart Lipton expressed enthusiasm about the transformation this merger brings to SDL, stating, “Scaling and optimizing our manufacturing processes and focusing on additional research will build upon SDL’s legacy of solving problems for our customers.”
Dr. Lipton will maintain his leadership role at the SDL manufacturing site initially, transitioning to a focus on research and development as the combined company continues to grow.
