Saskatchewan Expands Public Coverage for Dexcom CGM Systems
The Government of Saskatchewan has officially expanded its public coverage for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems, a decision that is set to improve diabetes care for many residents in the province. Effective today, this expansion includes full coverage for the Dexcom G7 and Dexcom G6 continuous glucose monitoring systems for young adults aged 18 to 25 and seniors aged 65 and over who are insulin-dependent. This move represents a significant step forward for the approximately 10,000 individuals with diabetes living in Saskatchewan, ensuring they have access to better management tools for their condition.
This expanded coverage follows Saskatchewan’s recent Budget 2025 announcement, which made Dexcom CGM systems available for additional age groups. Prior to this expansion, the systems were already reimbursed for individuals aged 2 to 18. Now, residents who rely on insulin and fall into the newly covered age groups—18 to 25 and 65 and older—will also benefit from public coverage, making these life-changing devices more accessible to a wider population.
Diabetes is a serious and complex condition that requires careful management to avoid complications like hypoglycemia, which can be life-threatening. The inclusion of the Dexcom G7 and Dexcom G6 CGM systems in the public coverage plan provides Saskatchewan residents with advanced technology that offers real-time data to help them better manage their blood sugar levels. These systems feature a unique predictive alert system called the Urgent Low Soon alert, which warns users up to 20 minutes in advance of an impending severe hypoglycemic event (blood sugar levels falling below 3.1 mmol/L). This early warning can be the difference between managing the situation proactively or potentially experiencing dangerous health complications.

André Côté, Vice President and General Manager of Dexcom Canada, praised the government’s decision, emphasizing the importance of accessible diabetes management tools for those relying on insulin. “Managing diabetes presents unique challenges for Canadians who rely on insulin.
While insulin is life-sustaining, determining the appropriate dosage can be challenging without the data provided by continuous glucose monitoring systems,” Côté said. “The Government of Saskatchewan’s decision to provide public coverage for Dexcom CGM, regardless of insulin type, is a significant and positive step forward for the diabetes community. This initiative will allow more Saskatchewan residents to benefit from Dexcom CGM, offering them real-time insights for more informed decision-making and effective diabetes management.”
Beyond just monitoring blood glucose levels, Dexcom CGM systems are integrated with a range of connected health solutions. These include insulin pumps that automate insulin delivery based on glucose levels and digital health apps that personalize care for users, offering a comprehensive view of their health. Additionally, the Dexcom Follow app enables family members and loved ones to remotely monitor a user’s glucose levels, providing additional support and peace of mind for those who need it most.
The decision to expand CGM coverage is timely, as many diabetes patients struggle with the challenges of balancing their insulin intake without constant, real-time data. By making this technology available to more people, Saskatchewan is helping to address a critical need within the diabetes community and improving the potential for better health outcomes.
Dexcom’s CGM systems are widely recognized as some of the most advanced in the field, setting the standard for glucose biosensing technology. The company’s commitment to improving diabetes management extends beyond just the devices themselves; it also includes the services and solutions that support users in managing their health on a daily basis.
This expansion of coverage is also a reflection of the increasing awareness of the importance of accessible healthcare solutions. As diabetes rates rise globally, the need for effective, real-time management tools has never been more urgent. By providing wider access to Dexcom’s advanced CGM systems, the Government of Saskatchewan is not only enhancing quality of life but also reducing the risk of serious complications related to diabetes.
