Meridian Health Plan of Illinois, a provider of managed care services for children, families, and individuals with complex medical needs, has expanded its telehealth program with Blueberry Pediatrics. Initially launched as a pilot in March 2024, the program will now be available to all YouthCare HealthChoice Illinois (YouthCare) members, which includes current and former youth in the care of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS), ages 0-21.
Under the expanded program, YouthCare members receive an at-home medical kit upon enrollment, which includes a pulse oximeter, thermometer, and a “smart” otoscope (a Wi-Fi enabled ear scope that sends images and videos to physicians). These tools allow Blueberry pediatricians to provide remote diagnoses for non-urgent conditions such as colds, flu, and earaches.
“Many families turn to emergency rooms for illnesses that can be effectively treated through telehealth consultations,” said Dr. Rutu Ezhuthachan, Meridian’s Chief Medical Officer. “This program demonstrates the value of bringing high-quality care directly to families, ensuring timely and convenient access to care without unnecessary ER visits.”
With approximately 30% of YouthCare’s 36,000 dependents under the age of 5, the telehealth service is particularly beneficial for young children prone to common illnesses. Since its launch, more than 2,400 YouthCare members have enrolled, providing fast and accessible care, especially as cold and flu season approaches.
“Through our partnership with Meridian, we’re thrilled to offer families the convenience of immediate access to pediatric care from home,” said Dr. Lyndsey Garbi, Chief Medical Officer of Blueberry Pediatrics.
While the telehealth program is designed to address urgent care needs when primary care physicians are unavailable, it does not replace in-person visits for annual check-ups, chronic care management, vaccines, or other physical exams.
