MedX Health Strengthens Scientific Leadership with Appointment of Renowned Skin Science Expert Dr. Paul J. Matts as Strategic Advisor
MedX Health Corp. (TSXV: MDX), a global leader in teledermatology and non-invasive skin analysis solutions, has announced the appointment of internationally recognized skin scientist, biochemist, and educator Dr. Paul J. Matts as Strategic Advisor. The appointment marks a significant step in the company’s mission to accelerate the early detection of skin cancer and broaden the impact of its advanced imaging technologies across healthcare and cosmetic applications.
A Distinguished Career in Skin Science
Dr. Matts brings more than three decades of groundbreaking experience in dermatological research, cosmetic science, and skin optics. He began his professional journey at Procter & Gamble (P&G) in 1988 after completing his PhD in biochemistry. Over the course of 36 years with P&G’s Research & Development division, he played a critical role in developing innovative measures of skin condition, health, and perception.
During his tenure, Dr. Matts was instrumental in advancing several of P&G’s most iconic brands across multiple categories, including skin care, personal cleansing, hand and body care, and colour cosmetics. His contributions extended beyond skincare, as he was frequently sought after as a consultant for scientific initiatives across other product categories.
Upon retiring in 2024, Dr. Matts held the position of Vice President of Research & Development and was honored with induction into P&G’s Victor Mills Society, the company’s most prestigious recognition for scientific innovation and contributions. This distinction underscored his enduring impact on the development of cutting-edge consumer products and his role in shaping global standards in skin science.
A Global Authority in Dermatology and Cosmetic Science
Dr. Matts is widely regarded as one of the foremost authorities in human skin optics, stratum corneum biology, sun protection, and the psychology of skin perception. His academic and professional achievements include authoring more than 65 peer-reviewed publications and delivering over 150 keynote presentations worldwide. These contributions have cemented his reputation as both a leading scientist and an educator in dermatology and cosmetic science.
His pioneering research also had a direct connection to MedX Health’s core technology. Dr. Matts was instrumental in the early development of Spectrophotometric Intracutaneous Analysis (SIAscopy®), the technology that powers MedX’s non-invasive imaging platform. For the first time, SIAscopy enabled simultaneous measurement of melanin, hemoglobin, and collagen beneath the skin surface, offering powerful diagnostic and cosmetic applications. The breakthrough laid the groundwork for SIAscopy’s use in the early detection of malignant melanoma and for advancing knowledge in skin health and beauty sciences.
Advancing Global Standards in Sun Protection
In addition to his corporate and academic achievements, Dr. Matts has played a critical role in shaping global test methods for sun protection. Since 1993, he has been actively involved in leading initiatives at both European and international levels to standardize testing for sun protection products.
At the European level, he served as Chairman of the Cosmetics Europe Sun Protection Methods Task Force and later as Chairman of the Sun Protection Strategic Advisory Group, where he led efforts to create robust, industry-wide methods for evaluating sunscreen efficacy. Internationally, he contributed as the UK expert to the International Standards Organisation (ISO) Technical Committee 217/WG5, which successfully developed and deployed four new international standards for SPF and UVA protection.
This extensive involvement highlights Dr. Matts’ role not just as a scientist but also as a consensus builder, working to ensure that sun protection products worldwide are measured consistently and effectively to safeguard public health.
Academic and Educational Contributions
Dr. Matts’ passion for education has been a defining theme throughout his career. Since 1993, he has served as a Lecturer in Cosmetic Science at the London College of Fashion, teaching both undergraduate and graduate students. His commitment to education was further recognized when he was appointed Visiting Professor at the UCL School of Pharmacy in 2007 and Visiting Professor at the London College of Fashion in 2010.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Matts has actively worked to support the next generation of scientists. In 2013, he founded the P&G Better Lives Awards, an annual recognition program for outstanding students at the London College of Fashion. His contributions to academia were most recently honored in July 2025, when the University of the Arts London awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in recognition of his leadership, innovation, and contributions to advancing cosmetic science and public benefit.
Humanitarian Leadership: Action on Podo
Beyond his academic and corporate achievements, Dr. Matts has also demonstrated a strong commitment to humanitarian causes. In 2012, he co-founded Action on Podo, an Ethiopian non-governmental organization dedicated to eliminating podoconiosis, a neglected tropical disease that causes debilitating leg swelling and affects more than 1.5 million people in Ethiopia alone.
Under Dr. Matts’ leadership, Action on Podo has successfully treated more than 40,000 patients to date, offering life-changing medical support and awareness in underserved communities. This initiative reflects his deep commitment to applying skin science not only in advanced research but also in direct efforts to reduce suffering from preventable skin diseases.
A Shared Mission with MedX Health
Commenting on his new role, Dr. Matts expressed enthusiasm about joining MedX Health at a pivotal moment in the company’s growth:
MedX is advancing the early detection of skin cancer at scale using its DermSecure® platform, coupled with MedX’s imaging technology (SIAscopy®). I am delighted to contribute my experience in skin optics, sun protection and perception science to help accelerate MedX’s mission to reduce the global burden of skin cancer and preventable skin disease.
MedX Health’s DermSecure® teledermatology platform, combined with its non-invasive SIAscopy imaging system, provides a scalable solution for improving access to skin cancer screening worldwide. Skin cancer, particularly melanoma, remains one of the fastest-growing cancers globally, with early detection being critical to survival. By leveraging Dr. Matts’ expertise, MedX aims to further strengthen its technology and expand applications in both healthcare diagnostics and the cosmetic industry.
Leadership Perspective
MedX Health CEO John Gevisser emphasized the importance of Dr. Matts’ appointment:
Dr. Paul Matts is not only one of the world’s foremost authorities on skin science and sun protection, but also an educator and humanitarian who has dedicated his career to improving the lives of others. His expertise will strengthen MedX’s scientific foundation and help advance our goal of delivering accurate, trusted and widely-accessible skin cancer screening and the development of new skin assessment technologies for the health and beauty industry.
Gevisser noted that MedX’s ability to integrate leading-edge science with accessible digital health platforms will be critical in addressing the growing global burden of skin disease. The addition of Dr. Matts, he said, reinforces MedX’s commitment to grounding its technology in scientific rigor while pursuing real-world impact.
