Johnson & Johnson MedTech Launches SOUNDSTAR CRYSTAL™ Ultrasound Catheter in the U.S. to Enhance Cardiac Ablation Procedures
May 2025 – Johnson & Johnson MedTech, a global leader in cardiac arrhythmia treatment, has announced the U.S. launch of the SOUNDSTAR CRYSTAL™ Ultrasound Catheter, a next-generation device for intracardiac echocardiography (ICE) imaging during cardiac ablation procedures.
The SOUNDSTAR CRYSTAL™ offers significantly improved 2D ICE image quality compared to other catheters on the market. It integrates seamlessly with the CARTO™ 3 Mapping System, including the CARTOSOUND™ FAM module, which leverages artificial intelligence to enhance anatomical mapping capabilities and streamline workflows for electrophysiologists.
Using a novel AI algorithm, CARTOSOUND™ FAM automatically reconstructs the left atrial anatomy from images captured during a rotational scan of the ultrasound catheter in the right atrium. This innovation simplifies the ablation workflow and helps clinicians make more informed, real-time decisions.
“We are proud to continue our tradition of innovation with this latest advancement,” said Jasmina Brooks, President of Electrophysiology at Johnson & Johnson MedTech. “The SOUNDSTAR CRYSTAL™ Catheter delivers superior image quality, improved maneuverability and stability, and integrates effortlessly with the CARTO™ 3 System. These features help support zero-fluoroscopy workflows, enhancing both patient and provider safety and procedural effectiveness.”
ICE imaging plays a vital role in ablation procedures by offering high-resolution, real-time views of cardiac anatomy, helping clinicians monitor catheter-tissue contact and quickly identify any complications. When paired with 3D electroanatomical mapping systems like CARTO™ 3, ICE supports accurate anatomy reconstruction and enables procedures to be performed with little to no fluoroscopy exposure.
Additionally, ICE-guided procedures can often be conducted under conscious sedation, eliminating the need for esophageal intubation or general anesthesia.
Dr. Amin Al-Ahmad, a cardiologist at St. David’s HealthCare in Austin, TX, shared his experience with the new catheter:
“In the cases I’ve performed with the SOUNDSTAR CRYSTAL™, I was impressed by the sharp visualization, clear tissue definition, and improved far-field imaging. The integration with the CARTO™ 3 System significantly simplified anatomical mapping and improved procedural workflow.”
The SOUNDSTAR CRYSTAL™ Catheter joins Johnson & Johnson MedTech’s growing ultrasound portfolio, which also includes the NUVISION™ Catheter—an advanced tool offering 4D imaging support for procedures such as Left Atrial Appendage Closure (LAAC).
The need for innovative solutions in arrhythmia care continues to grow. Atrial fibrillation (AFib)—the most common form of cardiac arrhythmia—affects more than 50 million people worldwide, including over 8 million in the U.S. If left untreated, AFib can worsen over time and increase the risk of stroke and heart disease. Catheter ablation remains a safe and effective method for correcting abnormal heart rhythms by targeting and restoring normal electrical signals.
