In Tokyo, Japan-Ukraine Conference Focuses on Economic Development and Reconstruction
Representatives from Japanese and Ukrainian governments and business organizations gathered in Tokyo on February 19 for the Japan-Ukraine Conference on Economic Development and Reconstruction. Led by Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, Japan pledged long-term support for Ukraine’s reconstruction through a public-private partnership. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal of Ukraine welcomed Japan’s assistance and invited Japanese companies to invest in Ukraine’s reconstruction. With over 100 government and corporate representatives from each side, totaling 300 participants and 130 companies, the conference highlighted cooperation in seven key areas including demining, humanitarian aid, agriculture, biotechnology, digital technology, infrastructure, and anti-corruption efforts.
Prime Minister Kishida stressed the importance of investing in Ukraine’s future and announced initiatives to support the country, including relaxed visa requirements for Ukrainian citizens. Prime Minister Shmyhal expressed gratitude for Japan’s support and highlighted the conference as a step forward in bilateral relations. The conference yielded 56 documents, including agreements on double taxation avoidance and bilateral lending, facilitating Japanese investment in Ukraine. Japanese companies also signed agreements for various projects, demonstrating a commitment to Ukraine’s reconstruction. Since the Russian invasion in 2022, Japan has provided continuous humanitarian aid, and the conference signifies a deepening of support through innovative partnerships and technological expertise.
