Inside Cardinal Health’s Innovation in Drapes and Gowns

In the fast-paced and high-stakes environment of the operating room (OR), precision and protection are critical. That’s why Cardinal Health’s Surgical Drapes and Gowns team focuses on creating products designed to safeguard both clinicians and patients during medical procedures. Every product in the Cardinal Health™ Surgical Drapes and Gowns portfolio serves as a protective shield, ensuring safety and comfort while meeting the highest clinical standards.

The team, part of Cardinal Health’s Global Medical Products and Distribution business, brings together expertise from research and development, medical affairs, clinicians, manufacturing, regulatory, marketing, and other areas. Their goal is to offer clinically differentiated solutions tailored to the needs of surgeons, with a particular focus on comfort and safety—factors that are crucial for optimal performance in the OR.

A Collaborative Approach to Innovation

Cardinal Health takes a thoughtful, strategic approach to product development, one that blends internal expertise with external insights from medical professionals. By collaborating directly with clinicians, the company ensures its solutions are not only relevant but also effective in addressing real-world challenges in the OR.

“We’ve developed a strong network of clinical key opinion leaders,” said Joel Colyer, VP of Global Product Marketing at Cardinal Health. “Their feedback helps us understand their challenges and needs, allowing us to deliver products that are practical and innovative.”

The team regularly holds panels with healthcare leaders and surgeons, including those from institutions like Cleveland Clinic and Lehigh Valley Health Network, to gather clinical feedback. This input helps Cardinal Health refine its products, ensuring they deliver value and meet the evolving needs of healthcare providers.

Dena Salamon, MSN, RN, a member of the Cardinal Health Perioperative Advisory Board, commented, “It’s exciting to see new innovations that enhance both clinician experience and patient care. We provide valuable insights during product development, helping ensure these products truly address the needs of the OR.”

Fusing Design and Functionality for Better Outcomes

In the pursuit of even greater product excellence, Cardinal Health has collaborated with institutions like the Columbus College of Art and Design (CCAD) to gain a fresh perspective on the functionality and wearability of surgical gowns. By combining the company’s medical expertise with CCAD’s design insights, the team is creating more comfortable and functional surgical wear.

“To continue offering high-quality surgical products, we’re always seeking ways to improve,” said Colyer. “Working with partners like CCAD helps us explore innovative ideas that push us to modernize our offerings.”

Practical Solutions: The SmartGown™ EDGE

One of Cardinal Health’s most significant innovations is the development of the SmartGown™ EDGE Breathable Surgical Gown with ASSIST™ Instrument Pockets. This gown, inspired by the practical toolbelts worn by mechanics, incorporates pockets to help surgeons keep essential instruments—like suture scissors and forceps—within easy reach.

Dr. Joseph Dearani, Director of Pediatric and Adult Congenital Heart Surgery at Mayo Clinic, initially had the idea after his experience working as a mechanic. He noticed how convenient it was to have tools readily accessible in his overalls, and wondered why surgical gowns couldn’t have similar functionality.

Through collaboration with Mayo Clinic Ventures and Cardinal Health, the idea was brought to life. After rigorous testing and regulatory approval, the gown now features two slanted chest pockets and a third deeper pocket, offering improved access to commonly used tools during surgery. The gown’s breathable material also keeps surgical teams comfortable during long procedures.

As Dr. Dearani reflected, “There’s huge potential for process innovation in the OR. It’s all about optimizing efficiency and standardizing surgical supplies to improve both clinician and patient outcomes.”

Addressing Real-World OR Challenges

Cardinal Health’s commitment to improving the OR extends beyond drapes and gowns. The team is also addressing practical challenges in the operating room with innovative products designed to save time, increase efficiency, and improve patient comfort.

  • Stray Away™ Hair Management Drape: This solution helps prevent hair from obstructing the sterile surgical site, streamlining preparation for procedures like craniofacial surgery. Its anchoring points and easy removal design save valuable time and improve patient experience.
  • CoolSource™ Cooling System: Designed to keep surgeons cool during long, intense surgeries, the CoolSource™ system features a lightweight vest with six cooling pack placements, helping to reduce fatigue, discomfort, and distractions caused by heat in the OR.

The Path Forward: Continued Innovation

Cardinal Health’s Surgical Drapes and Gowns team is constantly listening to feedback, exploring new ideas, and collaborating with clinicians to ensure they meet the evolving demands of the healthcare industry. By embracing innovation, incorporating fresh perspectives, and focusing on practical solutions, they continue to develop products that make a real difference in the operating room.

As Colyer put it, “The next great idea can come from anyone. We keep an open mind, actively listen, and challenge ourselves to explore new possibilities. It’s this passion for innovation that will help us continue advancing the industry.”

Through continued research, collaboration, and innovation, Cardinal Health is committed to improving both clinician safety and patient outcomes, ensuring that their surgical products continue to lead the way in the healthcare field.
