Hippocratic AI, the company developing the first safety-focused Large Language Model (LLM) for healthcare, has announced a strategic partnership with the Nurses on Boards Coalition (NOBC) to empower nurses in healthcare technology. This partnership reflects Hippocratic AI’s commitment to fostering the future of nursing and increasing nurses’ involvement in shaping healthcare technology. By leveraging this collaboration, the company aims to bridge the gap between nursing and technology while emphasizing the importance of governance, education, and hands-on opportunities for nurses to take on leadership roles in healthcare technology.
Key initiatives of the partnership include developing leadership modules for nurses to prepare them for positions on healthcare technology boards and advisory councils, as well as organizing workshops to explore the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. The partnership is designed to help nurses understand the technical aspects of AI and provide them with the tools to actively contribute to the development of healthcare technologies that prioritize patient care and ethical considerations.
Dr. Amy McCarthy, Chief Nursing Officer of Hippocratic AI, expressed pride in the collaboration, emphasizing how it empowers nurses to be at the decision-making table. “By empowering nurses to sit at the decision-making table, we ensure that healthcare innovation is driven by those who know patient care best,” she said. Dr. McCarthy highlighted the importance of nursing input in shaping AI solutions, as nurses bring ethical and human-centered principles to the development of technology, which is essential for improving patient outcomes.
The partnership aligns with the NOBC’s mission of increasing nurses’ influence in decision-making roles and advocating for their presence in healthcare boards and advisory councils. Dr. Cole Edmonson, CEO of NOBC, described the partnership as an inspiring step forward. He emphasized the transformative power of combining ethical AI with the holistic, patient-centered approach of nursing. “The power of ethical AI combined with the holistic human health-centered philosophy of nursing and nurse leaders serving on boards is transformative to the healthcare industry, our profession, and the health of our nation,” said Dr. Edmonson.
This collaboration builds on Hippocratic AI’s previous efforts to enhance nursing education and collaboration within healthcare technology. By focusing on the intersection of technology and nursing, the partnership aims to ensure that nurses have the knowledge and opportunities to shape AI solutions in a way that aligns with their expertise in patient care.
The Nurses on Boards Coalition was created in response to the 2010 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, which recommended increasing the presence of nurse leaders on boards to improve healthcare decision-making. Since its establishment, the NOBC has made significant progress, with over 10,000 board seats filled by nurses and more than 26,000 nurses registered in its database. The coalition continues to work toward increasing diversity in board opportunities and aligning these roles with the Social Determinants of Health.
Hippocratic AI’s mission is to develop a safety-focused LLM for healthcare, aimed at improving healthcare accessibility and outcomes globally. Co-founded by a team of physicians, hospital administrators, and AI researchers, the company has raised $137 million in funding from leading investors, including General Catalyst and Andreessen Horowitz.
This partnership between Hippocratic AI and the NOBC signifies a powerful step toward ensuring that nursing professionals have a critical role in the development of healthcare technologies, ensuring that innovations are patient-centered and ethically sound.
