Foot & Ankle: Fusion Orthopedics Strategically Expands Reach

Fusion Orthopedics USA, LLC (“Fusion”) has announced the successful expansion of its product portfolio with the acquisition of Metalogix External Fixation Systems. This transition, which includes Metalogix’s operations, distribution, and hospital accounts, is progressing smoothly, further establishing Fusion’s presence in the foot & ankle market for external fixation solutions.

By adding Metalogix to its offerings, Fusion is enhancing its external fixation solutions portfolio, which now includes Circular Static Frames, Dynamic Frames, Delta Frames, and the upcoming Mini-Rail System. Metalogix is best known for its Revolution EPS, a groundbreaking product in the foot & ankle fixation field. The Revolution EPS is designed to address long bone fractures, limb lengthening, and bone deformities, representing the next generation of external fixation systems.

The Revolution EPS and Revolution Trauma products are now available for distribution to both current Fusion and former Metalogix distributors across the United States. The product line’s expansion reinforces Fusion’s position as a leader in the foot & ankle segment, providing cutting-edge solutions to surgeons and patients alike.

One of the most notable features of the Revolution EPS is its proprietary open-back frame design, which enhances limb access for surgeons and hospital staff. This unique design helps reduce complications associated with swelling, allowing for smaller plates that provide better stability. These features offer a higher level of precision and flexibility, making the Revolution EPS a game-changer in the foot & ankle surgical field.

In addition to the open-back design, the Revolution EPS incorporates Metalogix’s patented Cold Forged Wire Tips, designed with a drill/flute configuration that facilitates easier insertion and may reduce thermal necrosis. The Cold Forged Wire Tips are durable, maintaining sharpness after over 50 uses, which speaks to their longevity and effectiveness.

Fusion’s aim to provide customizable, patient-specific solutions is further demonstrated by the 180-Degree Lockable Swivel Struts of the Revolution EPS, which allow surgeons to adjust the angle of the ring plates to meet the specific needs of a patient’s limb in the foot & ankle region.

The Revolution Trauma System is another critical aspect of the Metalogix technology, designed to provide solutions for complex fractures in the foot & ankle. The Revolution T Multi-Pin Clamp and Revolution T Z-Post utilize pin-to-pin super struts and multi-pin clamps that offer flexibility for a wide variety of surgical applications, including distal tibial and ankle fractures. The multi-pin clamp can accommodate up to three half pins, which can be inserted at various angles to support the surgical procedure. The adjustability of these components is vital for micro-compression and distraction, ultimately optimizing surgical outcomes for foot & ankle patients.

Fusion Orthopedics is excited about the acquisition of Metalogix and views it as an essential milestone in the company’s growth strategy within the foot & ankle sector. CEO Adam Cundiff emphasized, “The Metalogix milestone is a symbol of Fusion’s commitment to dominance within foot & ankle as we continue to realize hyper-growth as a profitable business.”

Ben Coburn, CEO of Metalogix, expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, “Fusion Orthopedics shares our values and commitment to excellence, and I am confident they will achieve great things in the foot & ankle space.”

Nathan Peterson, President of Fusion, shared the excitement about the synergy between the two companies. “The Metalogix devices align with Fusion’s dedication to provide ‘Everything Better’ in an effort to improve patients’ lives. These frames are incredible for foot & ankle treatments!”

Dr. Rich Derner, DPM, praised the innovation of Metalogix’s products, noting, “Metalogix is one of the most innovative external fixators. It will continue to revolutionize external fixation with its simplistic and efficient application, especially in foot & ankle surgeries.”

Dr. Alan Yan, MD, echoed the enthusiasm, stating, “I am excited about Fusion Orthopedics and Metalogix combining cutting-edge surgical technology to advance care in foot & ankle and trauma surgery. I look forward to working with the engineers and skilled surgical teams to drive continuous improvements and deliver the best possible outcomes for our patients.”
