CU Cancer Center and Flatiron Health Collaborate to Improve Clinical Trials
Flatiron Health, a leading healthtech company revolutionizing clinical research, has announced a new collaboration with the University of Colorado Cancer Center (CU Cancer Center) and their clinical care partner, UCHealth. The partnership will integrate Flatiron’s Clinical Pipe™ technology into their operations. This advanced electronic health record (EHR) to electronic data capture (EDC) connector is designed to enhance the efficiency of clinical trials by reducing the time and effort required for clinical study data capture.
Flatiron Health has announced a groundbreaking collaboration with the University of Colorado Cancer Center (CU Cancer Center) and UCHealth to enhance the efficiency and accessibility of clinical trials. This partnership leverages Flatiron’s innovative technology, Flatiron Clinical Pipe™, to streamline the data acquisition process and reduce the administrative burden on clinical trial sites, ultimately accelerating cancer research and improving patient care.
Flatiron Clinical Pipe™ is a cutting-edge tool that connects electronic health records (EHR) directly to electronic data capture (EDC) systems, enabling seamless data transfer. By eliminating the need for manual data entry, which is time-consuming and prone to errors, this integration reduces the workload on clinical trial sites. With the ability to directly transfer data from EHR systems to EDC, researchers and healthcare providers at CU Cancer Center and UCHealth can conduct more clinical trials, improving the research process while enhancing the quality of care for patients with cancer.
The collaboration with CU Cancer Center, one of the nation’s top cancer research institutions, and UCHealth, a prominent healthcare provider, represents a significant advancement in the way clinical trials are conducted. By reducing the time and effort involved in data entry, the partnership will streamline clinical trial management, accelerating the generation of evidence and making it easier for healthcare providers to focus more on patient care rather than administrative tasks.

Emily Akin, Head of Research Network at Flatiron Health, emphasized the importance of this collaboration: “Collaborating with CU Cancer Center and UCHealth, two market-leading cancer care providers, is an incredible opportunity to advance our shared vision to reimagine how clinical trials are executed.
Flatiron Clinical Pipe, currently in use at over 85 academic medical centers and community oncology sites, reduces the burden on clinical trial site teams, making clinical trials more accessible to conduct, streamlining data management, and accelerating study timelines.”
The efficiency of Flatiron Clinical Pipe™ is evident in its impact on clinical trial data management. Research published in ESMO Real-World Data and Digital Oncology demonstrated that the tool was able to transfer 11,342 individual data points, representing 955 unique case report form (CRF) submissions, with an average completion time of just 37 seconds per CRF (ranging from 15 to 59 seconds). By significantly reducing the amount of time spent on administrative tasks, the tool helps providers dedicate more time to patient care, ultimately improving the care experience for all involved.
Dr. Christopher Lieu, Associate Director of Clinical Research at CU Cancer Center, expressed excitement about the collaboration: “CU Cancer Center and our expert physicians and staff members are excited to continue being at the forefront of innovation in oncology research and collaborate with Flatiron Health on technology to reduce burden through technology-supported trials. Flatiron’s Clinical Pipe technology will support our trial teams and enable our network of providers to provide the best care possible, balancing patient needs with more efficient data management.”
Flatiron Health’s mission is to transform oncology care by utilizing data and advanced technologies such as machine learning and artificial intelligence. Through real-world evidence and innovative clinical trial solutions, the company strives to create smarter care pathways for patients with cancer. The collaboration with CU Cancer Center and UCHealth underscores Flatiron’s commitment to improving the efficiency of clinical research and accelerating the development of new cancer treatments.
Flatiron Clinical Pipe™ plays a key role in this transformation by making the clinical trial process more efficient, accessible, and faster. The tool’s integration with EHR systems enables a more streamlined workflow, reducing the need for duplicate data entry and minimizing errors. This is crucial for conducting clinical trials efficiently, especially in the oncology field, where timely data acquisition is critical for advancing new treatments and therapies.
