AI to Solve Clinician Challenges

At the heart of athenahealth’s offerings is its commitment to applying AI where it can make the most impact. According to athenahealth’s 2024 Physician Sentiment Survey, 64% of physicians reported feeling overwhelmed by administrative tasks. A significant 83% of these clinicians believe AI has the potential to alleviate these burdens. Understanding the pain points of physicians, athenahealth has focused its product development on reducing the administrative load, allowing clinicians to spend more time with their patients.

For nearly a decade, athenahealth has implemented AI across its platform, addressing a variety of tasks including patient check-in, encounter documentation, claims, and billing. These innovations help ambulatory care practices save time and improve financial performance. A major highlight is the introduction of Ambient Notes in October 2024. This AI-powered solution integrates ambient listening and generative AI into the athenaOne clinical workflow, automating clinical documentation. Practices can select from a range of AI-powered models, including Suki, iScribe, and Abridge, depending on their needs.

Paul Brient, Chief Product Officer at athenahealth, emphasized the importance of customer-driven solutions, saying, “Technology companies that listen to their customers, and build the solutions they actually need, are the ones that will drive AI adoption – and impact – in healthcare.”

athenahealth’s AI solutions aim to automate administrative tasks, allowing clinicians to focus on delivering the highest-quality care. The company will demonstrate Ambient Notes at its HIMSS booth and present more on its AI strategy during an Expo Hall Main Stage Session on Wednesday, March 5, at 1:45 pm PT.

Advancing Interoperability for Better Patient Care

Interoperability remains a significant challenge in healthcare, as progress on seamless data exchange has not met clinician and patient expectations. At HIMSS, athenahealth will demonstrate its continued commitment to improving interoperability, highlighting how the company’s solutions integrate data across multiple care sites to provide a comprehensive patient view.

“Clinicians need access to a patient’s complete record, even if care occurred across multiple sites,” said Sam Lambson, Vice President of Product Management at athenahealth. As the healthcare industry transitions towards value-based care, it’s crucial to have an integrated system that can provide clinicians with a 360-degree view of the patient. athenahealth’s efforts focus on going beyond basic data exchange, developing purpose-built workflows that make essential information available to clinicians at the right time.

At HIMSS 2024, athenahealth introduced ChartSync, a feature designed to provide clinicians with automatic access to the most relevant clinical information at the point of care. The company has already rolled out key functionalities, including medication fill data from pharmacies, and is expanding to integrate additional data sources like allergies and lab results.

In its role as a leading participant in the Trusted Exchange Framework and Common Agreement (TEFCA), athenahealth has migrated thousands of customers to the TEFCA platform, facilitating smoother, more coordinated care. This expansion will not only benefit clinicians but also provide patients with greater access to their medical records through secure personal health record (PHR) applications.

Addressing the Needs of Specialty Practices

athenahealth’s exclusive focus on ambulatory care has enabled the company to tailor its solutions for the unique needs of specialty practices. In 2024, athenahealth launched a series of athenaOne solutions designed specifically for women’s health, urgent care, behavioral health, and orthopedics. These solutions include specialty-specific workflows, product enhancements, and dedicated customer success experts who specialize in the relevant fields.

At HIMSS, athenahealth will reveal its plans for additional specialty-specific solutions in 2025, further solidifying its position as a leader in the ambulatory care space.
