ALS Therapy Development Institute Maps Clinical Trials with Esri Technology

The ALS Therapy Development Institute (ALS TDI), a nonprofit biotech firm dedicated to eliminating amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), has leveraged Esri’s mapping technology to introduce the ALS Trial Navigator. This innovative tool aims to simplify the process for ALS patients and caregivers to locate and learn about ongoing clinical trials. Through an interactive map, users can discover trial locations tailored to their specific condition, genetic profile, and disease progression status.

“ALS Trial Navigator serves ALS patients, potential future patients, and researchers by providing comprehensive information on global clinical studies,” said Dr. Nadia Sethi, ALS TDI’s Director of Community Engagement.

Time is critical for ALS patients seeking clinical trials, as eligibility often hinges on the duration since symptom onset, making swift access imperative. Pat Dolan, a former Esri solutions lead diagnosed with ALS, facilitated the integration of Esri’s mapping APIs into the ALS Trial Navigator. Dolan’s personal struggle navigating trial complexities underscored the urgency of improving access.

“The ALS Trial Navigator could save newly diagnosed patients up to 12 months in identifying suitable trials,” Dolan emphasized, highlighting the tool’s ability to match patients with trials based on their unique criteria, ensuring relevance and efficacy.

Launched in February 2024, the ALS Trial Navigator includes features like an interactive map and guided trial search, enabling users to filter trials by parameters such as placebo ratios and geographic location. It empowers ALS patients to make informed decisions about their treatment journey and fosters collaboration among researchers and advocates.
