(NASDAQ: AMZN), has announced that Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, has chosen AWS as its preferred cloud provider. This strategic partnership will accelerate Philips’ business transformation and enable the delivery of secure, innovative healthcare informatics solutions worldwide. By adopting a cloud-first, AI-driven approach, Philips aims to enhance its ability to provide better care to more people, accelerate product development, and lower infrastructure costs.

Royal Philips, a global leader in health technology, has announced a significant step in its digital transformation by deepening its relationship with Amazon Web Services (AWS). This collaboration will accelerate the innovation and scalability of Philips’ digital health solutions, ultimately improving patient outcomes, enhancing the patient experience, reducing healthcare costs, and boosting operational efficiency. By harnessing AWS’s advanced AI technology and healthcare-specific services, Philips aims to revolutionize healthcare by making its services more accessible, efficient, and impactful.

As part of its cloud-first strategy, Philips is migrating its healthcare data, applications, and services from on-premises data centers to the cloud. This migration will enable the company to expand its healthcare offerings globally. Through its collaboration with AWS, Philips has achieved significant milestones over the last 12 months, including:

  • Supporting more than 34 million patient exams exclusively in the cloud.
  • Securely managing over 134 petabytes of data, including nearly 11 billion medical images and patient records, with plans to scale this to one exabyte by 2030.
  • Expanding its healthcare informatics solutions to more than 200 healthcare customer sites across Europe, North America, and Latin America, improving security, and meeting local regulatory standards.
  • Developing its integrated diagnostics portfolio, including radiology, digital pathology, cardiology, and advanced visualization solutions, on AWS to scale and incorporate AI-enabled workflows.
  • Reducing infrastructure costs by up to 36% through the migration of several on-premises data centers.
  • Connecting over 1.3 million IoT devices to the cloud, further enhancing its capabilities.

Philips is also leveraging AWS’s AI and other purpose-built services to drive operational efficiency. By reducing repetitive administrative tasks, Philips enables its developers and product management teams to focus on their core clinical expertise, improving workflows and accelerating product development. One of the key areas where this is happening is in medical imaging. As the amount of medical imaging data increases due to the growing prevalence of complex diseases, Philips is using AWS HealthImaging to seamlessly manage the storage, analysis, and sharing of petabyte-scale imaging data in the cloud.

In addition, Philips has launched the Tasy Electronic Medical Record (EMR) AI Virtual Assistant, powered by Amazon Bedrock’s large language models. This AI-powered assistant automatically captures and transcribes important conversational data between doctors and patients in real-time, pre-populating patient charts. Doctors can then quickly review and confirm the information within the EMR, streamlining the charting and ordering process and potentially expediting patient discharge.

Philips is also exploring generative AI capabilities with AWS to help reduce administrative burdens in radiology, where staff shortages and burnout are widespread. AI-powered innovations such as conversational reporting, patient history summarization, and other workflow enhancements aim to reduce time-consuming, repetitive tasks, enabling clinicians to focus on critical decision-making and improving patient care.

The Philips Future Health Index 2024 Report revealed that 99% of surveyed radiology leaders are struggling with staff shortages, and 45% are experiencing symptoms of burnout. In response, Philips is collaborating with AWS to explore AI-driven solutions that reduce the time clinicians spend on administrative tasks and improve their ability to make crucial clinical decisions.

Additionally, several of Philips’ informatics solutions, including Radiology Operations Command Center (ROCC) and HealthSuite Imaging (HSI), are available in the AWS Marketplace, providing a streamlined process for companies to discover, try, buy, and manage solutions from AWS Partners.
