Elation Health, a clinical-first technology company driving innovation in primary care, today shared the results of its latest survey of 100 primary care physicians (PCPs). The survey provides valuable insights into the adoption and impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare, focusing on its role in easing physicians’ cognitive load and how current AI solutions are meeting expectations.
Elation Health, a leading clinical-first technology company, has released new findings from its latest survey of 100 primary care physicians (PCPs), shedding light on the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. The survey explores how AI is reducing administrative burdens for PCPs and improving clinical care, with many physicians expressing optimism about the role AI will play in transforming their practices in the coming year.
Key findings from the survey include:
- AI Reduces Administrative Burden: 66% of PCPs report that AI has already significantly decreased their administrative workload.
- Integration is Crucial: 65% of physicians believe AI solutions should be developed by their EHR vendor and seamlessly integrated into existing workflows.
- Impact on Clinical Outcomes: 63% of PCPs expect AI to have a meaningful impact on patient clinical outcomes.
- Improving Practice Efficiency: 66% believe AI will greatly enhance practice workflows over the next two years.
In addition to these operational benefits, the survey also found that a majority (54%) of PCPs are optimistic that AI will help improve the financial performance of their practices over the next year. This aligns with the growing belief that AI can play a pivotal role in making primary care more sustainable when integrated effectively into practices.
Dr. Sara Pastoor, Elation’s Head of Primary Care Advancement, commented, “AI scribing offers primary care physicians an affordable way to reclaim their time and focus more on patient care. It creates space for the human experience necessary to promote better health, while capturing more accurate documentation than ever before. Physicians are reducing stress, enjoying their work more, and increasing their ability to grow and sustain their practices—it’s a win-win-win!”
Despite the promise of AI, the survey also revealed some barriers to adoption. Many physicians still face challenges in overcoming the longstanding work culture in medicine, with nearly half of all U.S. physicians reporting burnout. Additionally, a study by the AMA found that PCPs using Epic spend an average of 7.3 hours per day in the EHR for every 8 hours of patient care, further compounding stress.
For those who felt AI was not reducing their clinical documentation burdens, “poor integration with existing systems” was cited as the top reason. This reflects a common complaint within the industry about AI’s challenges with EHR system integration.
Elation’s study follows the recent launch of its native AI scribing technology, Note Assist. This ambient AI tool captures clinical conversations in real time, seamlessly transforming clinical documentation and integrating key patient information directly into Elation’s EHR system.
The survey, conducted in September 2024, included responses from 100 independent primary care clinicians within Elation’s network. Full survey results are available here.
