Siemens Healthineers to Automate Patient Testing, Improving Lab Workflow and Staffing

Siemens Healthineers is introducing a new solution that consolidates 25 tasks traditionally performed manually by clinical laboratory staff, reducing manual workflow steps by 75%. This innovation redefines automation in clinical labs.

Conventional total laboratory automation relies on tracks to transport patient samples to various testing equipment. In contrast, the Atellica Integrated Automation combines sample management, decapping, and sealing functions within the Atellica CI Analyzer. This advancement allows laboratories with lower testing volumes or limited space to access automation typically found in high-volume labs.

As patient testing demands rise, laboratories face increasing pressure to do more with fewer staff. In the U.S., laboratory vacancy rates range from 7% to 11%, with some areas seeing rates as high as 25%. Similar shortages exist in the UK and Europe, impacting medical laboratories significantly. Atellica Integrated Automation serves as an extra set of hands for overburdened lab professionals.

Repetitive tasks essential for quality testing often disrupt lab workflow. A survey found that 95% of laboratory professionals believe automation will enhance patient care, while 89% agree it is necessary to meet demand. By utilizing Atellica Integrated Automation, a single technologist can efficiently manage calibration, quality control, and archiving in minutes instead of hours, freeing up time for more impactful activities like training and quality assurance.

This automation not only reduces waste but also increases sample processing capacity and enables labs to perform a broader range of tests as needs evolve. Outsourcing samples can hinder patient care due to delays and increased error potential. With Atellica Integrated Automation, 65% of samples experience faster turnaround times compared to competing systems.

Atellica Integrated Automation is also designed for labs with high testing volumes. Initially available on the Atellica Solution, it now extends to the Atellica CI Analyzer, offering standalone automation capabilities or integration with track-based systems for enhanced efficiency and throughput.
