Spok, Inc., a subsidiary of Spok Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPOK) and a leader in healthcare communications, has published its 14th annual survey on communication practices within U.S. healthcare organizations. This survey assesses how clinical communication is managed, highlighting trends, challenges, and future predictions. Drawing insights from over 150 healthcare executives, physicians, nurses, IT staff, and contact center representatives, this year’s report illustrates the ongoing evolution of communication challenges and opportunities in the sector.
Vincent D. Kelly, CEO of Spok Holdings, Inc., noted that U.S. healthcare systems are facing numerous clinical and operational challenges that complicate prioritization of solutions. The annual survey aims to provide insights that help healthcare leaders navigate these communication challenges and develop effective strategies for success in the future.
The 2024 survey revealed five key insights:
- Patient Safety and Data Security Are Paramount: The concern over protected health information (PHI) being shared through unsecured channels has increased significantly, highlighting the need for advanced communication technologies to enhance safety.
- Traditional Tools Retain Value: While preferences for specific communication tools may shift, reliable devices like smartphones and pagers continue to be essential, provided they are secure and efficient.
- Demand for Improved Collaboration: There is a notable gap in desired capabilities for care team collaboration, indicating a pressing need for better tools that facilitate faster decision-making.
- Burnout Rates Are Declining but Still Critical: Although reported burnout among healthcare workers has decreased from 42% to 32%, it remains a significant concern, with leaders encouraged to further address stress management.
- AI Presents Both Promise and Challenges: While there is optimism about AI enhancing communication and workflow, concerns about data privacy and ethical implications persist.
Kelly emphasized the importance of proper training and support for healthcare professionals as they adapt to new technologies. The survey highlights the need for leaders to educate their teams about the benefits of these solutions, addressing any hesitations to ensure confidence in embracing new capabilities.
The 2024 survey also offers insights into mobile device trends, the enduring role of pagers, strategies to combat burnout, and perceptions of AI in healthcare.
