GE HealthCare Launches CareIntellect for Oncology: AI Streamlines Patient Journey for Clinicians

GE HealthCare (Nasdaq: GEHC) has introduced CareIntellect for Oncology, a new cloud-based application that consolidates multi-modal patient data from various systems into a single, streamlined view. Utilizing generative AI, the application summarizes clinical notes and reports, enabling care teams to quickly assess disease progression and identify potential deviations from treatment plans, facilitating proactive interventions. Set to launch for U.S. customers next year, the initial focus will be on prostate and breast cancer.

CareIntellect organizes both structured and unstructured data—such as medical images, records, notes, and device readings—into an accessible format. It simplifies the review of complex medical histories, aids in evaluating treatment responses, assesses clinical trial eligibility, and monitors adherence to treatment protocols. This application is the first in GE HealthCare’s CareIntellect suite, designed for easy installation without the extensive integration typically required for new healthcare applications.

Currently, physicians often spend hours familiarizing themselves with a patient’s history, particularly for new patients, due to the volume of unstructured data scattered across siloed systems. This process can be frustrating and burdensome, especially when identifying deviations in treatment adherence that may indicate emerging issues. The lengthy cancer treatment journey, involving numerous appointments and tests, complicates care assessments and negatively impacts patient experiences. Additionally, 80% of oncologists feel overwhelmed by the extensive research and clinical trial information they must keep up with.

CareIntellect for Oncology streamlines the organization of multi-modal patient data, giving care teams a concise overview of the treatment journey while maintaining access to original reports. By reducing the time spent searching through multiple databases from hours to minutes, the application allows clinicians to focus on critical patient care decisions. It also flags risks related to treatment adherence, helping clinicians take timely action, such as addressing missed lab work that could delay treatment.

Tampa General Hospital and UT Southwestern Medical Center are among the early evaluators of CareIntellect, with integration already in progress. The application is expected to be widely available in the U.S. by 2025, with plans for future expansion into Canada, the UK, and Ireland.

Dr. Taha Kass-Hout, Global Chief Science and Technology Officer at GE HealthCare, noted that currently only 3% of hospital data is utilized due to the complexities of organizing and extracting actionable insights. He emphasized the importance of developing efficient, user-friendly technologies that reduce cognitive burdens for clinicians and streamline implementation for healthcare providers. CareIntellect aims to empower providers by providing critical patient information at their fingertips, allowing them to focus more on patient care.

Dr. Peter Chang, Senior Vice President and Chief Transformation Officer at Tampa General Hospital, expressed enthusiasm for the application, highlighting its potential to transform data analysis into actionable insights for patient care and clinical trial eligibility.

As part of GE HealthCare’s CareIntellect family, the application uses a common, cloud-first infrastructure that enables quick onboarding of new applications, minimizing the need for extensive integrations. CareIntellect will also be compatible with existing single sign-on systems, simplifying access and enhancing operational efficiency in hospitals.
