The 2024 National Diabetes Care Survey, a comprehensive analysis of Type 2 diabetes patients in the U.S., highlights the growing impact of cellular remote patient monitoring (RPM)™ on diabetes management. The survey reveals that an increasing number of patients are more likely to test their glucose regularly if their results are sent directly to their healthcare provider. This year, 88.3% of participants said they would test more consistently if their readings were shared with their doctor—a significant 34.8% increase from last year.
With many Type 2 diabetes patients visiting their doctors only twice a year, keeping track of glucose levels over long periods can be challenging, and inaccuracies in self-reported readings are common. It is estimated that 50% of patients either fail to track their readings properly or provide inaccurate data during office visits.
This marks the third consecutive year of increased willingness among patients to test more frequently. In the 2023 survey, 61.5% of participants expressed a similar sentiment, up from 46.8% in 2022 and just 35% in 2021.
As part of American Diabetes Month®, a time to raise awareness of the disease affecting over 38 million people in the U.S., the survey underscores the importance of regular glucose testing. Another 98 million Americans are estimated to have prediabetes. Research shows that nearly 45% of people with diabetes fail to adequately control their glucose levels, highlighting the importance of consistent testing and real-time data sharing with physicians.
Dr. Bill Lewis, member of the ClearHealth Quality Institute for Telemedicine Standards and Medical Advisory Board, explained, “When patients use a cellular-enabled glucose meter, they know their results are being sent immediately to their provider. Smart Meter’s iGlucose transmits instantly through an exclusive AT&T private data network, ensuring secure, accurate, and reliable data every time.”
Cellular RPM glucose meters, such as those provided by Smart Meter, offer an easy-to-use solution for patients to regularly test their glucose levels at home and transmit results to their healthcare providers. This enables physicians to identify trends, prevent hospitalizations, and improve patient outcomes between office visits. To support adherence, Smart Meter also offers an automated refill service, ensuring that patients receive glucose test strips directly at their doorstep.
The convenience of cellular-enabled glucose monitors leads to improved patient engagement and adherence to care plans, ultimately resulting in better diabetes control.
