High numbers of operations reflect medical expertise and structural strength: Since moving into the state-of-the-art new building in 2018/2019, the RHÖN-KLINIKUM Campus Bad Neustadt has performed its 100,000th operation. This significant milestone underscores the hospital’s role as a high-performing healthcare facility in the region – and far beyond.
The RHÖN-KLINIKUM Campus Bad Neustadt is not only a primary and regular care provider for the region, but also a nationally recognized specialty clinic. It combines numerous medical disciplines – from outpatient and inpatient care to rehabilitation – under one roof. Over 100,000 patients are cared for annually. The majority are from the region, and the specialist centers enjoy an excellent reputation throughout Germany and boast decades of professional expertise.
The supra-regional centers of excellence include, in particular, cardiovascular medicine, with the clinics for cardiac surgery, cardiology, and cardiac rehabilitation as an integrated heart center, as well as vascular surgery. The musculoskeletal center, comprising orthopedics, trauma surgery, sports traumatology, endoprosthetics, foot and ankle surgery, shoulder surgery, and hand surgery including rehabilitation, also represents a significant focus. The existing neurology clinic was supplemented in 2020 with the establishment of a neurosurgery department and expanded with the expansion of neuroradiology. This makes the campus a unique, interdisciplinary center for neurology in the region. Mental illnesses also receive special attention here: Large clinics for psychosomatics and rehabilitative addiction medicine, as well as numerous outpatient and day clinic medical structures, complement the comprehensive range of services.
With the move into the new building in 2018/2019, medical care was raised to a new level: The heart of the new building is the central operating room (Central Operating Room) with 16 state-of-the-art operating rooms, including two so-called hybrid operating rooms. These combine surgical, interventional, and imaging procedures in a single room and enable particularly precise, minimally invasive procedures – for example, for catheter-based valve therapies and vascular surgery. The close proximity of the emergency room, catheter laboratories, operating rooms, and intensive care and IMC wards structurally maps the patient treatment process and ensures smooth processes. Since 2021, outpatient surgeries at the Bad Neustadt campus have been performed in a dedicated Outpatient Surgery Center (AOZ) rather than in the Central Operating Room. Five operating rooms are available there. State-of-the-art medical technology and a modern digital and structural infrastructure ensure high standards of patient care in all areas. Each operating room is equipped with a complex video management system that provides physicians with treatment-relevant image data—for example, from ultrasound, computed tomography, or endoscopy—quickly and clearly. Thanks to robotic-assisted systems and optimized workflows, even complex procedures can be performed safely and precisely.
With approximately 3,000 employees and more than 15,000 surgeries per year, the RHÖN-KLINIKUM Campus Bad Neustadt is one of the largest and most efficient medical facilities in the region. Continuous investments in infrastructure and medical expertise ensure the highest level of care – today and in the future.
Facts and figures: 100,000 operations and a strong team
In both the central operating room and the outpatient surgery center, various disciplines work closely together in an interprofessional and interdisciplinary manner – supported by mutual trust and the shared goal of ensuring patient safety and satisfaction to the best of their ability. Since the move, the approximately 100,000 operations performed are now spread across numerous specialized departments: around 80,000 inpatients and around 20,000 outpatients. The surgical spectrum includes, among others, vascular surgery with over 12,000 procedures; neurosurgery with approximately 4,500; orthopedics, trauma surgery, shoulder surgery, and endoprosthetics with approximately 15,000; general and visceral surgery with approximately 9,200; and foot and ankle surgery with approximately 5,400. Cardiac surgeons working on campus have performed over 19,000 cardiac operations since 2019. The Department of Cardiology has performed more than 3,000 catheter interventions for heart valve disease in the hybrid operating room. The Department of Hand Surgery has recorded approximately 28,000 operations from 2019 to date. The 100,000th operation since moving into the new building was performed in the Department of Neurosurgery on June 24, 2025. The operation involved the removal of a cerebral artery aneurysm – a pathological bulge in the wall of an artery in the brain.
The average operating time is currently around 81 minutes – just under one and a half hours – across all specialties. In the central operating room, procedures last an average of around 98 minutes, while in the AOZ they are significantly shorter at around 40 minutes. Cardiac surgery accounts for the largest share of total operating time at 35 percent (since cardiac operations are generally more time-consuming), followed by hand surgery at 16 percent, trauma surgery at 13 percent, and vascular surgery at 12 percent.
Close collaboration between the operating disciplines and anesthesiology is crucial for treatment success. This department is responsible for safe anesthesia administration, pain management, and monitoring during operations, as well as operating room management. Anesthesiology focuses on cardiac anesthesia, with over 11,000 open-heart surgeries and more than 25,000 transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE) performed since 2019. TEE is a specialized ultrasound technique that contributes significantly to surgical success. Ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia, with over 35,000 procedures performed, also contributes significantly to patient-friendly pain management.
The impressive number of 100,000 operations performed since we moved into the new building is clear evidence of the trust of our regional and national patients – and the commitment of many: the surgical teams, the anesthesiologists, the nursing staff, and all support departments. Only through the smooth, equal collaboration of all those involved were we able to achieve this success and further expand this high-quality care,” says Hannah Gilles, Managing Director of the RHÖN-KLINIKUM Campus Bad Neustadt. “It demonstrates that our investments in modern infrastructure and interdisciplinary collaboration represent the right path for future-proof medical care.”
Medical development and specialization as a growth driver
A key reason for this high number of procedures lies in the structural and content-related development of the RHÖN-KLINIKUM Campus since the new building was constructed. The medical services offered have been significantly expanded, among other things, through the integration of the Bad Neustadt District Hospital: In addition to existing areas of focus such as cardiovascular medicine, hand surgery, and neurology, specialties such as gynecology, orthopedics, geriatric traumatology, trauma, visceral surgery, and neurosurgery, as well as neurosurgery and neuroradiology, have been added. This diversity has significantly broadened the surgical spectrum. At the same time, the cross-sectoral care concept with digitally networked, spatially closely connected outpatient and inpatient structures has significantly increased the proportion of outpatient procedures. The growing importance of minimally invasive and catheter-based procedures, such as valve therapies in the hybrid operating room, is also contributing to this development – particularly with regard to the aging population. Another driver of the increased number of operations is the high proportion of emergency patients. A central emergency room was established at the site with the new building. Care for seriously injured or acutely life-threatening patients is provided around the clock – even in unplanned situations and under extreme time pressure. As a certified regional trauma center, certified cardiac arrest center, and with a supra-regionally certified stroke unit, the hospital plays a key role in emergency care and makes an important contribution to the region’s public health system.
By achieving 100,000 operations since moving to the new building, the RHÖN-KLINIKUM Campus Bad Neustadt confirms its role as a medical beacon for the region,” says Prof. Dr. Sebastian Kerber, Medical Director and Chief Physician of the Department of Cardiology I at the RHÖN-KLINIKUM Campus Bad Neustadt. “The close integration of outpatient, inpatient, and rehabilitation care, coupled with state-of-the-art technology and highly qualified staff, makes sense, because medical progress and humanity should go hand in hand.
